Bloating, Distension, and Gas

The "Inflated" Sensation

  • The feeling: You wake up with a flat stomach, but by mid-afternoon, you feel and look "six months pregnant."

  • The impact: Your clothes fit differently by dinner, and the physical distension is as much of a burden as the discomfort.

  • The data: We use Breath Testing and Transit Mapping to find exactly where and why that air is being trapped.

The Science

Bloating is a measurable consequence of biochemical fermentation. When bacteria overgrow in the small intestine (SIBO), they ferment dietary carbohydrates and release gases like Hydrogen, Methane, and Hydrogen Sulfide.

  • The Mechanics: These gases create internal pressure (intraluminal hypertension) that stretches the intestinal wall.

  • The Transit Failure: Bloating often involves a failure of the "housekeeping" waves (the Migrating Motor Complex) to clear this gas, leading to stagnant pockets of air and visible distension.
